Meta Announces Layoffs in Ireland as Part of Global Workforce Reduction
Dublin: Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has begun implementing layoffs in Ireland, with affected employees receiving official notifications via email. The move follows Meta’s January announcement that it would lay off 5% of its lowest-performing employees worldwide as part of a broader restructuring effort.
Impact on Meta’s Irish Workforce
Meta employs approximately 2,000 people in Ireland, but the exact number of job losses remains unclear. Globally, the company has a workforce of 72,000, meaning the 5% reduction will impact approximately 3,600 employees.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and IDA Ireland have been in contact with Meta to assess the local impact of the layoffs. The company had previously cut 840 jobs in Ireland between November 2022 and May 2023 as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts.
Performance-Based Layoffs
In a memo to employees, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that the layoffs are part of an initiative to enhance performance management standards. Employees who failed to meet performance expectations over the past year are being let go.
Zuckerberg emphasised that the company is not reducing overall headcount permanently, as it plans to rehire for key roles in the future. He also assured that affected employees would receive generous severance packages to support them through the transition.
