Milk Prices Surpass Petrol in Parts of Ireland, Sparking Political Debate
Dublin: Rising commodity prices in Ireland have led to political tensions, with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald highlighting in the Dáil that milk now costs more than petrol in some areas. Her comments underscore broader concerns about inflation and living costs.
While petrol averaged €1.77 per litre in June, milk prices vary, ranging from €1.25 to €2.25 per litre, depending on the brand and retailer. Supermarket averages hover around €1.50 per litre.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) confirmed a 12% rise in milk prices over the past year, equating to an increase of about 27 cents for two litres.
Opposition parties are calling for a one-off cost-of-living aid package, but the government insists support should be targeted at those most in need rather than universally applied.
