New Policy to Offer Teachers Permanent Contracts After One Year
Dublin: Minister for Education Helen McEntee has announced a new policy allowing newly qualified teachers to become eligible for permanent contracts after just one year in the same role, aiming to reduce job insecurity and improve teacher retention.
The move addresses concerns over precarious employment in the profession and is intended to make teaching a more viable long-term career, particularly for younger teachers who often struggle to secure full-time positions despite ongoing staff shortages.
Currently, teachers must hold two consecutive contracts before being considered for permanency. Under the new rule, reappointment to the same post after one year—if the role remains viable—will qualify them for a permanent contract.
The policy is also designed to discourage emigration by offering earlier job stability and support teachers seeking mortgages. Additionally, the minister pledged to simplify the registration and induction process for teachers trained abroad, removing barriers to employment in Ireland.
Implementation guidelines will be developed in consultation with teacher unions and school management bodies.
