Northern Ireland’s Textile Success: Union Street (Lurgan) Profits from India-Based Production

Belfast: The remarkable growth of Armagh, a Northern Ireland-based textile company, highlights the benefits of strategic outsourcing. With its entire production operations based in India, the company has capitalised on lower labour costs, significantly boosting its profitability.

While the UK and Europe remain Union Street’s primary markets, accounting for over 92% of total sales, the company also supplies fabrics to high-end fashion houses and designers worldwide. Its products are distributed across major retail markets, including the USA, Europe, and Asia, with a strong presence in India.

Founded in 1912 by the Baird family, Union Street (Lurgan) has reported impressive financial results for the year ending March 31:

  • Revenue increased by 12%, rising from £68.9 million to £72.6 million.
  • After-tax profit nearly doubled, reaching £3.8 million, up from £2.1 million the previous year.
  • An interim dividend of £507,000 was distributed, compared to £425,000 in the prior period.

Despite the global economic challenges, the company continues to thrive, driven by its efficient supply chain and strategic cost management.

Global Expansion Plans and Workforce Statistics

Union Street (Lurgan) has identified new business opportunities in South America, Australia, and Japan, signalling plans for international expansion.

The company currently employs 768 workers, the majority of whom are based in India. Financial reports indicate:

  • Total salary expenditure rose from £7.8 million to £8.6 million.
  • The average employee salary is £11,170, significantly lower than the UK’s full-time average salary of £34,900.
  • The Managing Director’s salary stands at £197,894.

While Union Street (Lurgan) recorded strong growth, its subsidiary, WFB Baird, experienced a downturn:

  • Turnover declined by 8%, from £11.8 million to £10.8 million.
  • Profit after tax fell by 15%, dropping from £19 million to £16 million.

Despite this, Union Street (Lurgan) remains optimistic about the future, with plans to diversify its market presence and explore further expansion.
