Obesity to Cost Ireland €13 Billion by 2030 as 60% of Adults Face Overweight or Obesity Crisis

Dublin: By 2030, obesity is projected to cost Ireland €13 billion, with 60% of adults classified as overweight or obese. Additionally, one in five Irish children faces similar challenges, increasing their risk of developing serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers later in life.

A Slimming World survey highlights concerning trends: 72% of adults delay attempts to lose weight, with 79% of those aged 28-43 most likely to postpone. Over a third (34%) admitted to delaying weight loss for three or more years, often worsening their health and contributing to further weight gain.

Despite 57% being dissatisfied with their size and 87% expressing a desire to improve their health, over half think about weight loss weekly but fail to act. Moreover, 65% acknowledge unhealthy eating habits, emphasising the need for greater focus on health and wellness initiatives.
