Dublin: More than 150 on-duty gardaí have been assaulted so far this year, with 3,440 incidents recorded over the past 12 years, according to Department of Justice figures. Assault numbers have surged since 2022, peaking at 470 in 2023.
Recent Incidents Highlight Risks
The latest figures follow a knife attack on a probationary garda in Dublin Capel Street and a separate incident in which another garda was punched.
Aontú Senator Sarah O’Reilly condemned the attacks, warning they damage morale and recruitment, and urged support for her party’s bill introducing mandatory minimum sentences for assaults on gardaí and other frontline workers.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan praised the dedication of gardaí, noting their unarmed yet effective community policing model, and reaffirmed the importance of public trust in law enforcement.
