Patient, 89, ‘beaten to death’ in Mercy University Hospital, Cork
Cork: A young patient stabbed an elderly man to death in a Cork hospital. The shocking incident at Mercy University Hospital (MUH) in Cork. Gardaí have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the death of Matthew Healy, 89.
The unexpected murder inside the hospital stunned the nation. Other patients who witnessed the murder with their own eyes are still struggling to recover from the shock. The hospital authority is providing them with counselling and other services.
The attack happened around 5 a.m. on Sunday. The hospital has confirmed that he died as a result of his injuries. Following the incident, Gardaí sealed off a section of the hospital.
Other patients and staff discovered Matthew seriously injured in a ward. The enraged assailant was also there. He had no weapon with him. They then gave him all the first aid, but Matthew died within a short time. It is believed that the assailant did not know Healy, who is from Cork County. The Mercy University Hospital’s investigation may rely heavily on staff and other patients on the general ward where Matthew Healy was killed.
Healy’s body was subjected to a post-mortem examination, but the results were not made public. The incident is being thoroughly investigated, according to Garda, and the young man is being questioned at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork.
Matthew Healy, a farmer from Bearing in County Cork, had been in the hospital for a few days. Matthew Healy’s wife died on January 2.
The assailant used a walking frame to beat up the pensioner. The staff intervened and attempted to stop the violence, but Matthew had collapsed by then.
The Armed Support Unit immediately reached the spot and arrested the accused.
A MUH special team is also looking into the incident. This incident has had a significant impact on the hospital’s patients. The authorities clarified that they are receiving counselling and other services. A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to assist the deceased’s family. An incident room has also been opened at the station.
