Penalty points will be raised, and the government will charge separate fines for each offence

DUBLIN – Drivers who commit multiple offences at the same time will face increased penalties under proposed legislation.

Penalty points are currently only applied to more serious violations in the same incident. That means drivers who commit multiple offences will receive penalty points for each violation.

In the backdrop of increasing road accident deaths, the government is coming forward with new measures.

Road accidents have increased by 25% this year compared to the same period last year. Jack Chambers, junior minister responsible for road safety, said the rising number of road deaths was shocking.
He also stated that the government is planning a speed limit review to address inconsistencies in speed limits on roads.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he had held initial discussions with Gardaí about the need to implement road safety legislation more quickly.
