Public Consultation Launched for New Luas Light Rail Line
Cork: A new Luas light rail service is set to transform transport in Cork, with a proposed 18-kilometre route connecting Ballincollig to Mahon Point. A public consultation process has officially commenced, inviting feedback from residents and stakeholders on the proposed route. The consultation will remain open until June 9.
The proposed Luas Cork line will feature 25 stops, serving key locations including Munster Technological University, Cork City Centre, Kent Station, and Blackrock. The project also includes significant supporting infrastructure such as:
- A new bridge linking Kent Station to Kennedy Quay
- Dedicated cycling lanes to promote sustainable travel
- A park-and-ride facility with capacity for 1,000 vehicles in Ballincollig
- A public transport hub in Mahon
The Luas Cork project is being developed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and BusConnects, in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA).
Speaking at the launch of the public consultation, Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the light rail service as a landmark development in Cork’s urban transformation, highlighting its potential to enhance mobility, reduce congestion, and support environmental sustainability.
Cork City Mayor Dan Boyle welcomed the move, calling the Luas project a “long-awaited and much-needed investment” in the city’s future transport network.
The public is encouraged to participate in the consultation process and help shape one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the region.
