Refurbishment of hotel for refugees chased by mob in Aughrim, Wicklow

Wicklow: In Wicklow’s Aughrim, an unsettling incident unfolded as a mob confronted individuals engaged in renovating a hotel, prompting speculation that the renovations aimed to accommodate refugees. Gardaí swiftly launched an investigation into the matter, with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris emphasizing the right of individuals to engage in lawful work. The government also condemned the attack on the workers, denouncing such actions.

Upon receiving reports, Gardaí responded to the scene to assess the situation. Information gathered indicates that the site was not designated for international protection applicants, a confirmation reiterated by the Department of Integration. Nevertheless, Gardaí are probing the circumstances surrounding the mob’s actions.

Approximately 30 individuals, both men and women, converged at the site, vocally demanding the departure of the construction team. Video footage circulating on social media depicts the group urging the workers to vacate the premises, gesturing with nods, beds, and tools.

The builder hailed from Wexford, as observed in the footage, where an individual can be heard insisting on the builder’s immediate departure under threat of arson. The crowd’s applause follows this demand. A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the details of the incident are under investigation.
