Revised Pay Deal for Over 300,000 Public Sector Workers, Including Nurses, Teachers, and Gardaí, Takes Effect Today
Dublin: The revised pay agreement for over 300,000 civil and public service employees, including nurses, teachers, and Gardaí, will come into effect on Saturday, bringing an average salary increase of over €1,000 across all categories. This marks the second pay rise under the current agreement, with corresponding increases in premiums, overtime rates, and various allowances linked to basic pay. Additionally, thousands of pensioners will benefit from the adjustment.
Government departments issued circulars yesterday outlining the new pay scales. The agreement, reached between the government and union representatives early last year, will see approximately 170,000 HSE employees receive at least a 2% annual pay increase.
As part of the revised structure, those earning less than €50,000 per year will receive an additional €1,000—equating to an increase of approximately €85 per month before tax. Meanwhile, senior civil servants, consultant doctors, and judges in the highest courts will receive a weekly pay increase of around €100.
Further Pay Increases This Year
Under the agreement, there will be two further pay raises in 2025: a 1% increase from August 1st and another 1% increase from September 1st under local bargaining terms. Combined with the current increase, the total salary hike for this year will amount to 4%.
The final pay increase under the long-term contract is set to take effect in June 2026. Negotiations for a new pay agreement are expected to commence by the end of this year.
