Seán Kelly Rules Out Presidential Bid, Backs Mairead McGuinness as Potential Fine Gael Candidate
Dublin: Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly has confirmed he will not seek his party’s nomination for the presidency, calling it the “most difficult decision” of his political career. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, the Ireland South MEP said he had seriously considered running but ultimately chose to continue his work in Europe, where he feels he can have more political impact.
Kelly acknowledged the presidency as a unique opportunity but cited its largely ceremonial nature as a factor in his decision. He noted strong encouragement from Fine Gael colleagues and supporters but said his family fully supported his choice.
He expressed support for Mairead McGuinness, widely seen as a leading Fine Gael contender, calling her a “very good prospect.”
So far, Mary Hanafin is the only declared candidate. Sinn Féin has not ruled out a run by Mary Lou McDonald, while Joe Duffy has confirmed he will not enter the race.
