Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald Admits Party’s Position on Family and Care Referendum Was Misguided
Dublin: Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has candidly acknowledged that her party’s stance on the family and care referendum earlier this year was a misjudgment. Reflecting on recent setbacks, McDonald stated that Sinn Féin has taken valuable lessons from the past few months, emphasising that her commitment to learning from these experiences is sincere.
“The phrase ‘lessons will be learnt’ may be a cliché, but it holds real weight for Sinn Féin,” McDonald asserted, clarifying that this commitment is genuine and that the party is earnestly reassessing its approach. The referendum misstep also contributed to difficulties in the recent regional elections. Though Sinn Féin previously resisted acknowledging any error in its stance on referendums, McDonald hinted at a possible shift, suggesting the party may reconsider its approach.
“Sinn Féin has never claimed perfection—we are a working-class party, willing to recognise and rectify mistakes when they occur,” McDonald said, adding that the party remains open to change where needed. Acknowledging concerns raised by working-class voters over issues like immigration and hate speech, she appealed to the public to give Sinn Féin a chance to address critical issues like the housing crisis and rising cost of living.
