Surge in Brazilian Asylum Applications Follows Deportations from Ireland
Dublin: As deportations continue, Ireland is witnessing a rise in asylum applications from Brazil, according to new figures.
Last week, 42 Brazilian nationals were deported in an operation led by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB). Among them were 15 individuals serving prison sentences, who were returned after completing most of their terms. The GNIB confirmed that those subject to deportation orders are no longer in the country, though enquiries are ongoing to locate others who remain at large.
Authorities have noted that over 100 new asylum applications from Brazil have been filed since the deportations. Gardaí believe that hundreds of Brazilian nationals are currently living in Ireland without legal status, some of whom are suspected of criminal activity. Investigators say many entered the country under a student visa scheme for English language courses, which has reportedly been misused.
Detective Chief Superintendent Aidan Minnock, head of the GNIB, said the recent operation underlines Gardaí’s determination to enforce immigration law. “The detection and removal of individuals who are illegally present in the state remains a key priority,” he stated.
Figures released by the Department of Justice show that 2,713 deportation orders have been signed as of August 29 this year, with 1,386 removals carried out. This marks an increase on the same period last year, when 1,285 deportation orders had been issued.
Earlier this year, deportation flights included 32 people to Georgia in February and 35 people, including five children, to Nigeria in June.
