Teacher Enoch Burke has been formally dismissed by Wilson’s Hospital School

Dublin: A teacher has been fired following a controversy over how he addressed a transgender student. Enoch Burke, a teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in County Meath, has been fired after being suspended, jailed, and found in contempt of court. The teacher has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. So it is thought that the case and the commotion will not end with this.

The problems that arose in the school’s disciplinary committee the other day resulted in the teacher’s sudden dismissal. The meeting was attended by the teacher and members of his family. The absence of the board chairman, the participation of lawyers in the meeting, and the questioning of the teacher, mother, and siblings made the meeting noisy. Things then got out of hand when school management had to call the Gardaí.

The teacher and his family claimed that the chairman’s absence from the meeting was a forgery. However, the official explanation is that the chairperson was unable to attend the meeting due to health issues.

Board of Management Chairperson John Rogers and Principal Frank Milling directly informed him that he was dismissed from his job.

The issues began when the school management refused to accept the suggestion of addressing the transgender student. As an evangelical Christian, the teacher believed that accepting this suggestion would be contrary to the faith. He was suspended in August of last year.

The issue resurfaced when he returned to work despite being suspended. The management approached the High Court and obtained an order against the teacher. When this order was not followed, the court imprisoned the teacher. He spent 108 days in jail for contempt of court.

He was later granted bail during the Christmas holidays. The court granted bail with strict conditions, including a prohibition on returning to school. But when it reopened on January 5, he showed up in violation of his bail conditions.

Meanwhile, the High Court will rule on the application to confiscate his assets in the contempt of court case next week. At the same time, Burke has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals against several High Court orders. These cases are expected to be heard next month.
