Tents are being erected in the capital city, including on the Grand Canal in Dublin…

Dublin: Tents are cropping up across Dublin, notably along the banks of the Grand Canal, where more than 50 refugees, including Palestinians, have erected makeshift shelters.

Among the tent dwellers are both recent arrivals and individuals who have been in the city for several months. Dublin City Council is extending essential aid, providing rubbish bags, while volunteers from Phibsboro for All are offering assistance to the refugees.

The influx to the Canal Coast includes individuals who sought refuge due to a perceived sense of safety. Last Wednesday, 290 refugees were relocated from the encampment near the International Protection Office on Mount Street to Crooksling and City West. However, not all were accommodated, prompting some to return and set up tents in the city.

Saddam, a 22-year-old whose father fell victim to a bomb attack last month, is among those who have established tents along the canal. Ahmed, 25, hailing from Nablus, Palestine, has been in Ireland for two months. Following the closure of the Mount Street Camp, he ventured to City West in search of accommodation, but his efforts proved futile.

Abdoul, originally from Morocco, has resided in Ireland with his wife for six months, also joining the makeshift community along the Grand Canal. Their sustenance is sourced from Merchant’s Quay. Abdoul recounts facing threats with knives at a previous location, prompting their relocation to the canal bank as a safer alternative.
