Toronto: What happens if the sun does not rise one day?
This is a silly question for the residents of Utqiagvik, Alaska, North America, because the sun will not rise in this city for the next two months.
This is due to the phenomenon of ‘polar night’ within the Arctic Circle. This phenomenon is described as the months when the sun does not rise.
As part of this phenomenon, Utqiagvik residents in Alaska will have to wait another 66 days to experience sunrise.
The sun was last seen here last Wednesday. The sun set on Wednesday afternoon and will not rise again this year. The U.S. Meteorological Agency says the sun will rise here only after January 23, 2021.
These days are called polar nights because the sun is below the horizon for 24 hours. The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Ice Group has captured this natural wonder on a webcam.
