Washington: US Republican Party candidate Donald Trump has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that, if re-elected as president, he will intervene to end the Ukraine-Russia war. Trump expressed his commitment to bringing peace back to the world by ending the conflict, which has destroyed countless families and taken many lives.
Trump’s Commitment
Zelensky called Trump on Friday to congratulate him on his official nomination for the Republican presidential candidacy. During this conversation, Trump made his intentions clear. He reiterated his pledge on social media, stating that Zelensky condemned the assassination attempt on him and emphasised the need to stand firm in the fight.
Zelensky’s Response
Zelensky welcomed American support and expressed his intention to meet Trump personally to discuss measures for establishing peace in Ukraine. However, he also stated that there will be no immediate peace talks, though he welcomed the idea of Russian representatives participating in the next peace summit in November.
Potential Path to Reconciliation
The idea of a negotiated end to the conflict in eastern Ukraine has previously been rejected by many world leaders, who fear it would require ceding land. Vladimir Putin, with separatist support, invaded these areas in 2022, claiming that most of the population were Russians. In response, Zelensky launched retaliatory attacks.
Recent opinion polls indicate a growing preference for resolving the issue through negotiations. A poll by the Razumkov Centre, a Ukrainian think tank, revealed that 44% of Ukrainians believe it is time to start talks between Kiev and Moscow. However, more than a third (35%) of the population in the region remains opposed to initiating peace talks.
