Two Indian Nationals Identified in Fatal Carlow Accident

Carlow – The two Indian nationals who lost their lives in a tragic car accident in Carlow on Friday morning have been identified as Bhargav Chitturi (23) and Suresh Cherukuri (24), both natives of Andhra Pradesh. The victims were driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on the N80 at Graygunaspidog in Leagh, Rathoe, when the car veered off the road and collided with a tree. The vehicle was travelling from Mount Leinster via Fenagh to Carlow town when the crash took place. Tragically, both Chitturi and Cherukuri succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Three other passengers, all Indian nationals residing in Carlow town, sustained serious injuries and were transported to St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny. The hospital has confirmed that their injuries are not life-threatening.

Among the passengers, three were pharmaceutical students at South East Technological University (SETU) in Carlow—two of whom had recently graduated, while the third is still enrolled. One of the passengers had recently secured employment at MSD, a pharmaceutical company in Carlow.

Carlow Garda Superintendent Anthony Farrell stated that authorities are in contact with the Indian community in Carlow and the families of the deceased. He confirmed that investigations into the accident are ongoing, with factors such as road conditions, weather (4°C at the time), and the vehicle’s position on the wrong side of the road all being examined.

Notably, this tragic incident occurred at Leagh Bends, the same location where three young individuals lost their lives in a crash exactly one year ago.

Public Appeal for Information

The Gardaí have reopened the road following investigations and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward. They are particularly seeking:

  • Camera footage, including dashcam recordings
  • Witnesses who were on the N80 in Leagh between midnight and 1:15 a.m.

Individuals with any information are urged to contact Carlow Garda Station at 059 913 6620, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any local Garda station.

Fundraising Initiative for the Victims’ Families

The Indian community in Carlow has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the families of Bhargav Chitturi and Suresh Cherukuri during this difficult time. The fundraiser, organised by Venkat Vuppala, aims to cover funeral expenses and provide financial assistance to their grieving families.

“In these challenging times, it is important to come together to support the bereaved families.”.

Donations can be made through the GoFundMe page, and the community is appealing for generous contributions to help ease the financial burden faced by the victims’ families.
