A wildfire erupted northeast of Athens on Sunday, filling the sky with smoke and soot as it spread rapidly towards Lake Marathon, a key water reservoir for the city. Over 400 firefighters, supported by 110 fire engines and numerous volunteers, battled the flames, which reached heights of 80 feet. Gale-force winds fuelled the fire, forcing evacuations in nearby villages and the northern suburbs of Athens. While a separate fire west of Athens was contained, authorities remain on high alert, with half of Greece under a “red alert” for wildfires due to ongoing hot, dry, and windy conditions.
