International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – November 25, 2022

The Dominican Republic’s Mirabal sisters were slain on November 25, 1960, by henchmen of dictator Rafael Trujillo. The sisters, who had been engaged in anti-Trujillo groups, were assaulted and strangled to death before being placed in a Jeep that was driven off a mountain road to make their deaths look accidental. The United Nations General Assembly established November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in December 1999. The event marks the beginning of a 16-day period of remembering and activity that culminates in International Human Rights Day.

According to a United Nations study, 19% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 had suffered physical and/or sexual assault “by an intimate partner.” In some situations, the women are killed as a result of this brutality.

HOW TO OBSERVE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: Just a small step!

  1. Join the movement to show your support and solidarity.
  2. Share photographs, notes, and videos of how you “#orange the world” alongside other women across the world.
  3. Write an op-ed to inform others about the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
