Catherine Connolly Sworn In as Ireland’s 10th President in Grand Ceremony at Dublin Castle

Dublin: Catherine Connolly was formally sworn in as the 10th President of Ireland during a grand inauguration ceremony held at St. Patrick’s Hall in Dublin Castle, the historic venue where every Irish president has taken office since 1938. Connolly’s inauguration marks a milestone in Irish history, as she becomes the third woman to hold the presidency.

The ceremony began with prayers led by religious leaders representing a variety of faiths and traditions, including the Catholic Church, Church of Ireland, Islam, Presbyterian, Methodist, Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Humanist communities, reflecting Ireland’s diverse and inclusive society.

Chief Justice Donal O’Donnell administered the oath of office, after which President Connolly signed the Declaration of Office, formally assuming her presidential duties. As tradition dictates, a 21-gun salute was fired from Collins Barracks, and the Chief Justice presented her with the Seal of Office, symbolising the transfer of power.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris, former presidents Mary McAleese and Mary Robinson, members of the judiciary, and political leaders from across the spectrum. Former President Michael D. Higgins, who completed his term earlier this week, received a warm ovation from the audience at St. Patrick’s Hall.

Following the inauguration, President Connolly began her official duties with a luncheon at Áras an Uachtaráin, the presidential residence, and later attended a state reception at Dublin Castle. Meanwhile, former President Higgins formally departed the residence, marking the end of his distinguished term in office.

“I Will Use the People’s Mandate Effectively”

In her inaugural address, President Connolly expressed gratitude and humility, pledging to faithfully implement the mandate given to her by the Irish people.

“I take office with humility, gratitude, and pride. I will serve this nation with dedication and integrity, ensuring that Ireland remains a country that welcomes all, values diversity, and recognises housing as a basic human right,” she said.

She emphasised Ireland’s proud legacy of neutrality and peacekeeping, noting that the nation could play a pivotal role in promoting peaceful diplomatic solutions to global crises such as war, famine, and climate change.

Reflecting on her campaign experiences, President Connolly said she had met “many people living without access to essential services” and vowed that “such inequality should not exist in a nation as prosperous as ours.”

Focus on Unity, Culture, and the Irish Language

President Connolly announced that her first official visit will be to Northern Ireland, underlining her commitment to strengthening ties across the island. She also reaffirmed her support for a united Ireland, the promotion of the Irish language, and engaging the global Irish diaspora to sustain Ireland’s heritage and values.

Political and Public Tributes

Prime Minister Micheál Martin congratulated the new president, expressing confidence in her leadership and promising continued cooperation between the presidency and government. He also paid tribute to former President Michael D. Higgins for his “outstanding service and enduring contribution” to the Irish Republic.

Among those present were Attorney General Rossa Fanning, Speaker Verona Murphy, Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill, and former prime ministers Leo Varadkar and Bertie Ahern, alongside numerous other dignitaries.
