Gardaí Detect Thousands of Traffic Offences Ahead of St Patrick’s Day

Dublin: An Garda Síochána has recorded thousands of traffic violations as part of an intensified nationwide road safety operation in the lead-up to St. Patrick’s Day.

In the first 72 hours of the campaign, 2,550 drivers were caught speeding since last Thursday. Gardaí said the figures highlight ongoing concerns about dangerous driving behaviour across the country.

Fatalities and Arrests

Two people have died in separate road accidents in County Meath and County Wicklow, bringing the total number of road deaths in Ireland this year to 36.

During the operation, Gardaí also:

• Arrested 93 drivers for drink-driving
• Detected over 200 offences related to mobile phone use and failure to wear seat belts

Extreme Speeding Cases

Among the most serious offences recorded were:

• A driver travelling at 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N4 road at Ballyowen, Lucan in Dublin
• Another driver clocked at 137 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the M7 motorway near Kildare

Gardaí have urged motorists to reduce speed, avoid distractions and ensure they are fit to drive.
