Bill Gates Warns Governments Are Unprepared for AI Risks, Calls for Global Regulation
Washington: Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates has warned that no government in the world is adequately prepared to address the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), which he believes could fundamentally transform human life.
Gates said the rapid development of AI would create extraordinary opportunities for humanity but could also lead to serious and potentially uncontrollable dangers.
Although he has long been optimistic about AI’s potential, Gates said the speed of technological advancement and its possible social consequences had prompted him to reassess some of his views. He identified widespread job losses, AI-enabled cyberattacks and growing emotional dependence on AI companions among the major threats.
Gates also revealed that he has been discussing AI-related challenges with world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, and plans to raise the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. He urged major global powers to set aside political differences and work together to establish effective AI regulations.
Limited Understanding of AI Risks
Gates said he did not believe any government was addressing the AI challenge with the level of seriousness and depth it required. He also warned that relatively few people fully understand how quickly the technology is advancing or how significantly it could reshape governments, workplaces and society.
Despite his concerns, Gates highlighted the potential of AI to improve the lives of people in developing countries. If deployed responsibly and under appropriate controls, he said, AI could help reduce inequality in sectors such as education, healthcare and agriculture.
Healthcare, in particular, could benefit significantly. AI could assist frontline medical workers with diagnosis and treatment, support the development of new medicines and vaccines, and improve access to healthcare in regions where specialist doctors are scarce.
Gates Compares AI to Alien Intelligence
Gates compared the emergence of AI to the plots of disaster and science-fiction films in which countries overcome their differences to confront a common threat.
“AI is like an alien intelligence. It’s not just a thing that’s coming; it’s already here,” Gates said, emphasising the need for international cooperation.
He argued that individual countries introducing legislation would not be sufficient to manage the technology’s global impact. Instead, he called for coordinated international action and strong regulatory mechanisms to ensure that AI remains under human control.
Gates Foundation to Invest $1 Billion in AI
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced plans to spend at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to AI’s potential benefits.
The funding is expected to support institutions and projects working in education, healthcare and agriculture, with a focus on making technological advances accessible to ordinary people and disadvantaged communities.
The investment forms part of the foundation’s broader plan to spend approximately $9 billion annually. Gates has advocated a dual approach: ensuring that humans retain control over AI while using the technology to improve living standards for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
