Dublin: The online auction of gold assets seized by An Garda Síochána has generated approximately €1.8 million for the State, as part of efforts to strip criminal networks of illicit profits.
The assets, including an 18.8kg gold bar, were confiscated during anti-money laundering operations led by the Dublin Crime Response Team. The auctions, which began in January, are being conducted by Wilsons Auctions and are open to public participation.
Proceeds from the sales are transferred directly to the government treasury. Individual auction rounds raised €456,395 in the first sale, followed by €500,430, €438,265, and €408,720 in subsequent auctions.
Ken Holohan said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to combat organised crime by targeting its financial foundations. He emphasised that removing illegal gains is key to disrupting criminal operations and deterring future offences.
