Backlash as MASI and Advocacy Groups Condemn Gerry Hutch’s Remarks on Immigration

Dublin: Strong criticism has emerged from migrant advocacy organisations, including the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, following controversial comments by Gerry Hutch regarding immigration in Ireland.

Hutch, who is contesting the Dublin Central by-election, suggested in a campaign video that undocumented migrants arriving in Ireland should be detained or deported. The remarks were made during an appearance at a boxing club in Dublin’s north inner city and have since drawn widespread condemnation.

Advocacy groups and campaigners described the comments as harmful and out of step with Irish and international human rights standards. MASI co-founder Lucky Khambule said the statements were “deeply troubling” and reflected a disregard for the rights and dignity of people seeking protection.

Khambule emphasised that applying for asylum is a legal right in Ireland, adding that individuals fleeing persecution are entitled to seek international protection under established laws and international conventions.

Hutch’s remarks come as he ramps up his campaign for the by-election triggered by the resignation of Paschal Donohoe. He previously secured more than 3,000 first-preference votes in the 2024 general election and has been actively campaigning both online and locally.

The controversy has intensified debate around immigration policy and political rhetoric, particularly as the election approaches. Critics argue that such statements risk inflaming tensions, while advocacy groups continue to call for a more balanced and rights-based discussion on migration.
