Midlands Prison in Portlaoise reports the first Covid outbreak in an Irish prison. Since the beginning of the pandemic, no Irish prisons were reported for a virus outbreak, but now, the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise becomes the very first Irish prison to report it.

After five inmates of the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise were tested positive for Covid-19, other 815 prisoners and staffs are now being tested.

The Irish Prison Service said that the five prisoners, who were tested positive for Covid has been isolated as per the guidelines and their contact tracing is also in progress.

As a precaution, all other prisoners and the staffs are undergoing proper testing. Irish Prison Service had said these things through a statement.

The statement said that the [positive cases related to one area of the prison and all the inmates accommodated in this area along with the designated staffs have been tested for Covid-19.

The prison service had also said that an outbreak control team meeting was done to review the conditions and to evaluate the spread and further things within the jail.
