Calls Grow for Additional Bank Holidays in Ireland to Match EU Average

Dublin: There are increasing calls for Ireland to introduce more public holidays in order to align with the European average, with proposals now under consideration from political leaders.

Roderic O’Gorman, TD for Dublin West and leader of the Green Party Ireland, has urged the government to expand the number of bank holidays from the current total of 10 closer to the European Union average of 12.

Among the options proposed is the formal recognition of Good Friday as a public holiday, noting that it is no longer universally observed as a day off. O’Gorman also suggested introducing a new summer bank holiday on the first weekend of July.
