Cherrywood Town Centre Expansion Approved: 10,500 Homes Planned for South Dublin Development

Dublin: A major milestone has been reached in the development of South Dublin after Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council approved an extensive new planning framework for the expansion of Cherrywood Town Centre.

The ambitious development plan will facilitate the construction of up to 10,500 homes and is expected to accommodate approximately 26,000 residents, significantly boosting housing supply in the region.

Major Growth Planned for Cherrywood

The approved scheme outlines a comprehensive vision for Cherrywood Town Centre, including new residential developments, retail and commercial spaces, employment hubs, community services, and enhanced public amenities.

The revised planning framework also allows for the construction of taller landmark buildings, high-quality civic spaces, and improved streetscapes, helping to create a vibrant and modern urban centre at the heart of the development.

Officials say the updated scheme will enable the delivery of additional housing in line with national apartment and urban development guidelines.

The updated Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) Planning Scheme was approved following a vote at a special meeting of the council, paving the way for the next phase of development in one of Ireland’s largest planned urban expansion projects.

The approval is expected to accelerate investment and construction activity in the area over the coming years.

Among the proposals included in the masterplan is the potential development of Ireland’s first winter sports and entertainment arena, which could become a major recreational and tourism attraction for the region.

Councillor Eoin O’Driscoll described Cherrywood as set to become the largest strategic development zone in Ireland, highlighting its importance in addressing housing demand and supporting long-term economic growth in the Greater Dublin Area.
