EU Suspends Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Imports for Six Months
Brussels – The European Union has announced a six-month suspension of planned retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports, following a provisional understanding reached with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to an EU Commission spokesperson.
The EU had prepared two alternative tariff packages in response to U.S.-imposed duties, primarily targeting steel, aluminium, and automotive products. These measures, which were scheduled to take effect on August 7, will now be paused to allow time for the two sides to continue negotiations.
The decision to delay implementation comes amid continued uncertainty surrounding the full scope of the agreement between the EU and the U.S. President Trump signed an executive order last week imposing a 15% tariff on most EU products, although key sectors such as spirits, automobiles, and automotive parts were notably excluded.
The EU Commission spokesperson stated that while progress has been made, “several elements of the agreement remain to be clarified,” and discussions are ongoing. The parties are currently working toward finalising a joint statement, building on commitments made during high-level discussions on July 27.
