Havelock Road in the Britain will now be known as Guru Nanak

LONDON: Havelock Road in Britain will no longer be known by the name of the old British military commander; instead by the name of the Sikh religion founder, Guru Nanak. The largest gurudwara in London is located here.

The road has long been named after Sir Henry Havelock, the British Major General who suppressed India’s first war of independence against the British East India Company in 1857. The renaming coincides with Guru Nanak’s 551st birthday.

The name was changed on the recommendation of a commission appointed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to diversify public spaces.
