India Leads in Ireland’s 2024 Work Permit Approvals
Dublin: India has maintained its dominance in Ireland’s work permit landscape, accounting for the largest share of permits issued in 2024, according to data released by the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment. Out of 39,390 work permits granted last year, 13,566—approximately 35%—were issued to Indian nationals.
The work permits were predominantly allocated across key sectors such as healthcare, social work, and information and communication technologies.
Work Permit Statistics for 2024
Ireland received a total of 42,910 applications for work permits in 2024. Of these, an impressive 91.8% were approved, reflecting the country’s continued reliance on skilled foreign workers.
- Approved Applications: 39,390
- Rejected Applications: 2,456 (5.72%)
- Withdrawn Applications: 1,064 (2.48%)
Top Countries for Work Permits
After India, the largest number of permits were granted to nationals from:
- Brazil – 4,553 permits
- Philippines – 4,049 permits
- China – 1,962 permits
- Pakistan – 1,742 permits
- South Africa – 1,631 permits
- United States – 1,119 permits
- Nigeria – 974 permits
- Zimbabwe – 971 permits
- Malaysia – 662 permits
Rejection Rates and Notable Trends
Brazil topped the list for rejected applications, with 618 permits denied—representing 25% of its total applications. Remarkably, all applications from Bolivia were rejected in 2024, highlighting stringent eligibility requirements.
Sector-Wise Distribution
- Healthcare and Social Work: 12,501 permits (31.7% of total)
- Agriculture: 6,788 permits (17.2%), the highest number in this sector to date
- Information and Communication, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing: Experienced steady growth, contributing to around 9% of the permits issued
Monthly Permit Issuance Trends
Permit issuance remained consistent throughout the year, with over 4,000 permits granted each month, except for July, which saw a dip to 3,000 permits. In contrast, March, September, October, and December recorded an average of 2,900 permits issued monthly to foreign workers.
