Indian Nationals Emerge as Leading Buyers of New Homes in Ireland

Dublin: Indian immigrants are rapidly becoming one of the most influential groups in Ireland’s housing market, particularly in the purchase of newly built homes, according to a recent report from a leading Dublin-based financial organisation.

Over the past three years, the number of highly skilled professionals from India—especially in the IT and healthcare sectors—purchasing first-hand homes has grown significantly. Many of these buyers are long-term residents who intend to settle permanently in Ireland, driving strong demand despite limited housing supply and rising prices.

By contrast, property ownership in the rental market continues to be dominated by American and Chinese investors.

Latest mortgage data highlights the strength of demand among first-time buyers. In July alone, mortgage approvals totalled €1.61 billion, with more than €1 billion accounted for by first-time buyers.

Brian Hayes, CEO of the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), noted that the number of first-time buyers and mortgage approvals rose 21% year-on-year.

In 2024, a total of 49,384 mortgages were approved, of which 30,550 were first-time buyer mortgages. Applications under the government’s Help-to-Buy scheme also surged, rising 45% to 23,902 in the first seven months of 2025, according to Revenue Commissioners data.
