INMO Urges Mileage Rate Review Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Dublin: The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has called for an urgent revision of mileage rates to reflect escalating fuel costs, warning that community healthcare workers are facing increasing financial strain.

In a letter addressed to the Human Resources Director of the Health Service Executive (HSE), INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha urged authorities to lift existing travel restrictions and allow the highest mileage rates during the current fuel crisis.

The union highlighted that its support lines are being inundated with calls from nurses and midwives who rely on their own vehicles to deliver essential community care services. It stressed that these frontline workers should not be expected to bear rising operational costs out of their own pockets.

Ní Sheaghdha emphasised that adequate reimbursement is critical to ensure the continued delivery of community healthcare, particularly during a period of increasing living and fuel expenses.

In response, an HSE spokesperson stated that the organisation was not aware of the INMO’s formal request and indicated that the matter would more appropriately fall under the remit of the Department of Public Expenditure.
