Ireland Ranked World’s Most Powerful Passport in 2025
Brussels: Ireland has officially been named the holder of the most powerful passport in the world, topping the 2025 Nomad Capitalist Passport Index. This marks the first time Ireland has claimed the number one spot outright, surpassing all other 199 nations included in the global ranking.
The Nomad Capitalist Passport Index, published annually by the international tax and immigration consultancy Nomad Capitalist, evaluates passports not only on visa-free access but on a broader range of criteria, offering a more holistic picture of global mobility and citizenship value.
Ireland Surpasses Switzerland, U.S. Falls to 45th
Ireland earned a score of 109, edging out countries like Switzerland, Greece, and Portugal. In recent years, Ireland has consistently ranked near the top, tying for first place in 2020 with Luxembourg and Sweden. The 2025 win reflects Ireland’s growing international reputation, favourable tax policies, and high level of personal and economic freedoms for citizens.
In contrast, the United States fell to 45th place, tied with San Marino—a significant decline attributed to its complex tax regime and limitations on dual citizenship.
India Drops in Nomad Rankings, Climbs in Henley Index
The Indian passport ranks 148th globally, tied with Comoros, and received a score of 47.5. This marks a slight drop from its 147th position last year. However, in the separate Henley Passport Index, which focuses solely on visa-free travel based on IATA data, India climbed from 85th to 83rd place.
Meanwhile, Pakistan ranked at the very bottom of the Nomad Capitalist Index, with Iraq, Eritrea, Yemen, and Afghanistan filling out positions 195 through 199, indicating extremely limited global travel access and weak personal and economic freedoms.

This approach evaluates passports based on a blend of mobility, financial freedom, international perception, and individual rights. Data is collected and analysed across 199 jurisdictions using government sources, international databases, and expert research.
