Ireland’s New Cabinet Formed Under Micheál Martin

Dublin: Ireland’s new cabinet, led by Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, has been formally approved by President Michael D. Higgins. The cabinet consists of 15 senior ministers, with notable changes in portfolios for all but Fine Gael’s Enterprise Minister, Peter Burke. The reshuffle signals a new phase of governance as the coalition government takes charge.

Key Cabinet Changes and Composition

While many senior figures from the previous administration retain cabinet roles, significant changes have been made:

Charlie McConalogue, the former Minister for Agriculture (Fine Gael), remains in the cabinet but has lost his ministerial rank.

Three super junior ministers have been appointed: Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton and Independents Seán Canney and Noel Grealish.

Despite expectations, Fine Gael’s Niamh Smyth and Timmy Dooley were not included in the new cabinet.

The number of junior ministers has increased from 20 to 23. Additionally, Mary Butler of Fianna Fáil has been appointed as the government chief whip. Senior legal expert Rossa Fanning continues in her role as attorney general.

Cabinet Composition by Party

Fine Gael holds eight cabinet positions, including the prime minister’s role. Notable appointments include:

James Lawless, James Browne, and Dara Calleary joining the cabinet.

Charlie McConalogue is no longer a full cabinet member but retains a portfolio.

Among Fine Gael’s returning ministers, only Peter Burke retains his previous portfolio. Notably, Dara Calleary, who resigned during the “Golfgate” controversy, has been reinstated.

Gender Representation and Regional Distribution

The 15-member cabinet includes 12 men and three women:

Helen McEntee, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, and Norma Foley are the three female senior ministers.

Mary Butler, in addition to her Chief Whip role, serves as Minister for Mental Health, bringing the total female representation in the cabinet to four.

Geographically, the cabinet is predominantly represented by Leinster (11 members), followed by Munster (three members) and Connacht (one member). Notably, there are no ministers from Ulster.
