Man Dies After Alleged Strangulation Near Dublin’s Temple Bar, Inquest Hears

Dublin: An inquest has begun at Dublin District Coroner’s Court into the death of Romanian national Dan Andrei Alexuc (41), who died near a pub in Dublin’s Temple Bar area last Christmas.

The court heard that the cause of death was manual strangulation, according to a post-mortem examination conducted by State Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis. The inquest has been adjourned until November 18 for further consideration.

Coroner Myra Cullinane told the court that alcohol intoxication, high blood pressure, and heart disease were also identified as contributing factors in Alexuc’s death.

Alexuc, a married father of two from Newcastle, Dublin, worked as a service delivery team manager in Citywest. The incident occurred on December 14, 2025, while he was attending a Christmas party in the city centre.

He was reportedly found unconscious at around 1am by security staff and was later handed over to Gardaí. Emergency services transported him to St James’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His wife, Adela Alexuc, formally identified the body to Gardaí.

During the hearing, Detective Inspector Damian Kelly applied for an adjournment under Section 25(1) of the Coroners Act, stating that criminal proceedings relating to the case are under consideration. Detective Sergeant Kelly also informed the court that the Garda investigation remains ongoing and that a file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The incident has additionally been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). A representative for GSOC, Maria Nicholson, requested access to the post-mortem report during the proceedings.

The case has drawn renewed public attention to concerns surrounding deaths involving restraint and strangulation incidents in Ireland. It follows the recent death of Congolese national Yves Sakila in Dublin city centre, which also sparked public protests and calls for accountability from human rights organisations.
