Michael Healy-Rae Blames Brother’s Remarks for Loss of Ministerial Role

Dublin: Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae has said that comments made by his brother, Danny Healy-Rae, contributed to his loss of a ministerial position in the Department of Agriculture.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Kerry, Michael Healy-Rae said he believed the controversy surrounding his brother’s public remarks played a significant role in the events that led to his resignation as Minister of State earlier this year during the fuel price protests.

Danny Healy-Rae had called for the government to be defeated in a crucial confidence vote and urged governing party members to challenge their leadership. Michael Healy-Rae argued that such comments were unhelpful and ultimately damaged both his position and Kerry’s representation in government.

Reflecting on the controversy, Michael Healy-Rae said it was not the role of an independent politician to instruct members of governing parliamentary parties on how they should act.

“The reality is that Kerry lost a ministerial position in the Department of Agriculture following those comments. That is deeply disappointing,” he said.

He revealed that, in the hours leading up to his resignation, efforts were made to resolve the situation and prevent further political fallout. However, he said the controversy had already escalated beyond control.

Despite the setback, Michael Healy-Rae rejected suggestions that the political influence of the Healy-Rae family is nearing an end. However, he acknowledged that recent events have prompted a period of reflection. He said he intends to assess the situation carefully and ensure that he is surrounded by trusted advisers and supporters going forward.
