“Ponniyin Selvan 1” reaches the Rs 300-crore mark globally in 5 days, positioning the film to become one of Mani Ratnam’s biggest successes.
The Tamil historical action drama “Ponniyin Selvan: 1”, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, and Karthi, continues to captivate viewers worldwide. The film, directed by maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam, has collected a record Rs 300 crore globally in only five days. Ratnam’s magnum work is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s eponymous 1955 book. Various trade sources have reported that the film has topped Rs 300 crore at the global box office, with Tamil Nadu alone crossing Rs 100 crore. On September 30, the film, also known as “PS: 1,” was released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. It is also the first Tamil film to be released in the IMAX format. While the film is performing extremely well across the world, it has yet to beat the gigantic blockbusters ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, both of which grossed more than Rs 600 crore. According to film industry analysts, the picture has been attracting a huge number of spectators this week due to the Dussehra holidays. Given the tremendous income the picture is pulling in, film experts believe “PS:1” will be Ratnam’s biggest commercial hit so far.
The historical play depicts the early years of Chola Emperor Rajaraja I. (947–1014). The film, which is divided into two parts, is said to have a budget of Rs 500 crore. The film’s primary filming began on December 11, 2019. The entire film was completed in 150 days. The film also represents Mani Ratnam’s fourth collaboration with former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Bachchan made her debut in Ratnam’s 1997 political drama “Iruvar,” starring Malayalam icon Mohanlal.
Both critics and audiences have praised “PS: 1.” The film’s highlights include breath-taking photography, a beautiful background soundtrack, excellent performances, and stunning production designs and costumes. The film’s soundtrack was composed by AR Rahman, the cinematography is by Ravi Varman, and the art direction is by Thotta Tharani. R Sarathkumar, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Rahman, and R Parthiban also featured.
