Retail Sector Faces Severe Impact as Fuel Protests Disrupt Trade Nationwide

Dublin: Ireland’s retail sector is facing significant disruption as ongoing vehicle blockades linked to fuel price protests continue to affect supply chains and customer access across the country.

Retail Excellence Ireland has warned that retail activity in major city centres—including Cork, Galway and Limerick—has dropped by as much as 50%, raising serious concerns about the sustainability of businesses.

The organisation said the widespread blockades are preventing customers from reaching town centres while also disrupting deliveries to shops and distribution hubs. Food and essential goods are reportedly struggling to reach urban centres, including Dublin, placing additional strain on already stretched supply chains.

Chief Executive Jean McCabe acknowledged the financial pressures facing farmers and hauliers but warned that the actions are now threatening the livelihoods of thousands of workers in the retail sector.

The group has called for urgent and meaningful engagement between the government and all relevant stakeholders to resolve the situation and restore normal trading conditions.

Retail Excellence Ireland also highlighted the knock-on effects of empty fuel stations, noting that shortages are compounding logistical difficulties and further weakening consumer activity.
