St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in New Delhi Highlight Growing India–Ireland Ties

New Delhi: Celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day in New Delhi have underscored the strengthening economic and cultural relationship between Ireland and India. The event, held in collaboration with senior government representatives, also served as a platform to reinforce international partnerships.

St. Patrick’s Day is observed annually as a global diplomatic initiative to promote Irish heritage, values, and economic engagement. This year, Irish officials are visiting more than 50 countries, including major economies such as Argentina, France, Spain, and India.

Speaking at the event, Rossa Fanning, Ireland’s Attorney General, emphasised that India remains a key partner for Ireland across trade, education, and people-to-people connections. He noted that approximately 100,000 Indian nationals currently live and work in Ireland, making a significant contribution to the country’s workforce and academic sectors.

Of these, around 15,000 are students enrolled in Irish universities. Fanning highlighted that India has become Ireland’s second-largest source of international students within the European Union, after Germany.

While the figure of 100,000 may appear modest in the Indian context, he pointed out that it represents nearly 2% of Ireland’s total population of 5.7 million. He also acknowledged the vital role played by the Indian community in key sectors such as technology, finance, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare.

Fanning further highlighted the steady growth in bilateral trade between New Delhi and Dublin. Trade between the two countries currently stands at approximately €16 billion annually, reflecting a significant expansion in economic engagement.

The global St. Patrick’s Day outreach continues to serve as a strategic initiative for Ireland to showcase its cultural heritage while deepening ties with key international partners. “It is a privilege to be in India at this time, given its importance as a partner for Ireland,” Fanning said, reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening this relationship further.
