Tech sector urges government to ease regulatory burden
Dublin: Technology Ireland, the IBEC group representing the country’s technology sector, has called on the government to ease regulatory pressures that it says are stifling innovation and undermining Ireland’s competitiveness.
In its pre-budget submission, the group warned that the European Union’s complex framework of digital and AI-related regulations is creating a significant legal and compliance burden for tech companies, particularly startups and SMEs. It stressed that while online safety is vital, the current regulatory approach risks damaging Ireland’s reputation as a global technology hub.
Technology Ireland argued that greater consistency and simplicity in applying rules across the EU is urgently needed. As one of Europe’s leading tech centres, Ireland, it said, should champion more innovation-friendly policies at EU level.
The group also urged the government to make strategic use of the National Training Fund, investing heavily in advanced digital and AI skills to future-proof the workforce. Director Una Fitzpatrick said this investment would be critical to securing Ireland’s long-term position in artificial intelligence.
In addition, Technology Ireland called for the swift implementation of the National Semiconductor Strategy, “Silicon Island”, to ensure Ireland remains at the forefront of global chip innovation.
