Trump’s Remarks on PM Modi Trigger Political Debate; MEA Responds

New Delhi: Comments attributed to US President Donald Trump about Prime Minister Narendra Modi have sparked political discussion in India, after a video clip from a recent press conference began circulating widely on social media.

In the clip, Mr Trump is heard praising Mr Modi while also making remarks that have drawn varied interpretations. Speaking at a joint press interaction alongside the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Mr Trump reportedly said: “Modi is a great man. He loves me. Don’t look at the word love differently. I don’t want to ruin his political career, but you have to understand, I’ve been watching India for years. My friend has been there for a long time now.”

Responding to media queries, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said he had not seen the video. “If such a video exists, whether authentic or otherwise, appropriate action will be taken,” he stated, while reiterating that India would respond appropriately to any remarks concerning the Prime Minister.

Mr Jaiswal also addressed questions regarding recent revisions made by the White House to the fact sheet of the proposed India–US Interim Trade Agreement. He clarified that the amendments were based on a joint understanding between the two countries. The India–US Joint Statement outlining the framework for the interim agreement was issued on February 7, 2026, and both sides remain committed to finalising the arrangement.

His remarks come amid reports pointing to differences between the US fact sheet and India’s earlier official statement.

On India–Russia relations, Mr Jaiswal said engagement between the two countries continues across a broad spectrum of areas, including trade, culture and defence. He emphasised that all aspects of the bilateral relationship are expected to continue expanding in the coming years.
