Portugal brush aside Switzerland 6-1, to play Morocco next in the Quarter Finals

With Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, Portugal’s striker scored a hat trick to beat Switzerland 6-1 and advance to the World Cup quarterfinals. Goncalo Ramos, a 21-year-old forward who made his Portugal debut only a month ago, made his first start for his nation and displayed the type of precision finishing that Ronaldo was known for.

Ramos opened the scoring in the 17th minute and added two more in the 51st and 67th minutes, by which time shouts of “RONALDO! RONALDO!” were echoing throughout the 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium. Ronaldo came on as a replacement in the 72nd minute to thunderous applause, but Portugal had already won, with defenders Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro scoring and Rafael Leao scoring the late goal.

Morocco enter quarters for 1st time after Bounou’s shootout heroics vs Spain.

Yassine Bounou was in superb form as Morocco won 3-0 on penalties against Spain after their FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 match finished 0-0 in extra-time at the Education City Stadium in Qatar. Walid Cheddira and Alvaro Morata both missed penalties as the game entered penalties. After Sarabia missed Spain’s first attempt, Sevilla goalkeeper Bounou came out on top in the shootout, blocking Soler and Busquets. Meanwhile, a panenka by Achraf Hakimi clinched Morocco’s win, advancing them to their first-ever quarterfinals.
