Stay-at-Home Parenting Holds Higher Value Than Average Income in Ireland

Dublin: If you find yourself dedicating your days to caring for your children while not formally employed, take heart—the value of your contributions exceeds the average person’s income in Ireland! A recent study conducted by Royal London Ireland, an insurance company, reveals that the estimated annual worth of a stay-at-home childminder is €54,590, surpassing the average individual income of €45,000.

This research determined the financial value by assessing the typical daily tasks carried out by a parent caring for children at home. Real-time wage data was then used to calculate the cost of hiring someone else to perform these responsibilities.

The Stay-at-Home Parent Survey uncovered that a significant 90% of individuals underestimate the monetary value associated with being a stay-at-home parent. Furthermore, when accurately gauged, the study suggests that the work performed by women in domestic roles at home holds even greater value.

In the 2022 census, Ireland recorded 272,318 people engaged in domestic work, with a noteworthy 90% of them being women. Interestingly, census data indicates a rise in fathers taking on childcare responsibilities at home, juxtaposed with a decline in the number of stay-at-home mothers.
