Waterford: In a unanimous decision by the Jury of European Capitals and the International Jury of City of Christmas 2024, Waterford has been honored with the esteemed title of European City of Christmas for the year 2024. The accolade was presented to Waterford by a distinguished panel led by Member of the European Parliament, Danuta Hübner, recognizing the city’s exceptional projects, outstanding proposals, and unwavering commitment to the cherished European values of Christmas. The panel lauded Waterford as an extraordinary gem, exemplifying unity and beauty during the festive season.
The judges commended Waterford as the epitome of creative culture, with the entire city exuding a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Illuminated markets add to the city’s charm, creating a dazzling spectacle. Numerous associations and stakeholders are collaborating to craft a unique and enchanting Christmas experience for both tourists and locals alike.
The organisation of Winterwall, Ireland’s inaugural Christmas festival, further contributed to Waterford’s excellence. Initiated by the Waterford City and County Council in 2012, this six-week festival has consistently drawn an average of 500,000 visitors, solidifying its status as a beloved seasonal tradition.
While Waterford secured the title of European City of Christmas, the Jury bestowed the honour of European Christmas Capital to Brno in the Czech Republic. Additionally, a special mention was accorded to Almaza, a small municipality in Spain boasting fewer than 600 inhabitants, recognizing its noteworthy contributions to the festive spirit.
