Employers Hiring Technical Graduates in AI and Blockchain Fields, ESRI Report Finds

Dublin: A recent study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has revealed that employers in Ireland are  “taking” technical graduates, specialists in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and blockchain. The research, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, highlights that while universities are meeting the demand for new expertise in these areas, businesses remain cautious in their hiring approach.

The study, which analysed data from multiple sources, including online job vacancy monitoring and employer workshops, points to the increasing demands of the labour market due to the recently approved European Artificial Intelligence Act. As AI-related regulations come into force, employers anticipate a significant rise in workforce requirements.

The report also suggests that companies need to develop comprehensive policies to better manage AI-related changes across various levels of their organisations. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Patrick O’Donovan, welcomed the findings, stating that the report will provide valuable insights for shaping future policy decisions.

Dr. Seamus McGuinness, one of the report’s authors, emphasised the importance of preparing both businesses and graduates for the evolving demands of the AI-driven labour market.
