Elon Musk Featured on TIME Cover Amid Growing Influence in Trump Administration
TIME Magazine’s latest cover features Tesla CEO Elon Musk seated behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, symbolising his rising influence within the Trump administration. Musk now heads the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), granting him significant authority over federal workforce reforms.
The cover, with TIME’s signature red border, shows Musk holding a cup of coffee, positioned between the American and presidential flags. In their feature, Simon Schuster and Brian Bennett note, “Musk appears accountable only to President Trump, who entrusted his campaign benefactor with a sweeping mandate to align the government with his agenda.” Both DOGE and the White House declined to comment on the department’s operations.
When asked about the cover, President Trump dismissed the topic, mockingly questioning whether TIME was “still in business.” This came weeks after he celebrated being named TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year, an honour he first received in 2017. Despite downplaying the cover, Trump praised Musk’s efforts to eliminate “fraud, corruption, and waste,” particularly after Musk’s controversial move to shut down USAID.
Meanwhile, Musk faced backlash after a DOGE staffer resigned over racist remarks, though Musk promised the individual would be reinstated, with Vice President JD Vance backing the decision.
Interestingly, TIME has previously spotlighted Trump’s key allies, notably Stephen Bannon in 2017, dubbed “The Great Manipulator.” The cover reportedly irked Trump, and Bannon exited the White House the following year. In an apparent attempt at damage control, Musk later posted on his social media platform, “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man.”
