UK Introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation for European Visitors
Starting this week, the UK has extended its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement to most European nationals, marking a significant shift in post-Brexit travel policy. The ETA, already used by travellers from the U.S., Canada, and other visa-exempt countries, is now required for visitors from around 30 European countries, excluding Ireland.
The ETA is digitally linked to a traveller’s passport, allows multiple visits of up to six months, and remains valid for two years. Applications take about 10 minutes via an app or website, with most approvals processed quickly. However, authorities advise applying up to three days in advance.
Initially priced at £10, the fee will rise to £16 from April 9. A grace period, lasting until September or October, will allow entry for those without an ETA.
UK officials say the system enhances border security by enabling pre-arrival screening of travellers’ immigration and criminal records. Travellers with an ETA will also benefit from faster processing at eGates.
The ETA will eventually apply globally. Since its 2023 launch, it has expanded to include visitors from Qatar, several Gulf states, and countries such as Argentina, South Korea, and New Zealand. Nearly 1.1 million ETAs have been issued to date.
The system aligns with the EU’s upcoming ETIAS, set to launch in 2026, which will require similar permits for visa-exempt visitors to 30 European countries.
With Heathrow welcoming 84 million passengers in 2024, UK officials hope the ETA system will streamline border control while maintaining high security standards.
