IBTS Issues Urgent Appeal for 2,000 Blood Donations Amid Critically Low Supply
Dublin: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has issued an urgent call for 2,000 additional blood donations over the next four weeks, citing critically low supplies—particularly for O negative, B negative, and O positive blood types. Current stocks are at just for days, well below the ideal seven-day reserve.
Paul McKinney, Director of Donor Services and Logistics, highlighted the ongoing high demand and reduced donor attendance due to recent holidays and favourable weather. The summer travel season is also impacting donor availability.
A stock management alert has been sent to hospitals, urging restricted use and reduced on-site supplies. If conditions worsen, an ‘amber alert’ may be declared, potentially affecting elective surgeries.
The IBTS is urging donors, especially in Dublin and Cork, to attend clinics, and is appealing for new donors—particularly those of African heritage—to help diversify the donor pool. Appointments can be made at giveblood.ie or by calling 1800 731 137.
